Improve productivity by slowing down your email

Manage teams better by delaying your email!

Improve productivity by slowing down your email. Email programs increasingly include the ability to schedule your emails. You can choose when they are sent – in the future, not the past. (They’re not that clever yet. But, you know, AI…)

Good reasons to do so include the ability to correct mistakes (I always delay emails by one minute), hasty words and so on. But there’s a really, really good reason to use it if you work weird hours and manage a team…

Be nice and benefit

Don’t send emails to colleagues over the weekend or late at night, even if that’s when you work best. It causes stress – they may feel under pressure to respond right away. And, if they read it, you’ve distracted them from important down-time.

Worse for you, they may also forget your message when it’s time to get back to work, because it’s not at the top of the pile and it’s not highlighted as being unread.

Schedule emails to be sent first thing (e.g. 0800 or 0900) on a work day. That way you’ve crossed it if your list and can move on to other things, and they will see your messages at the optimal time.
